Celebrate Pickle Day at Ben's
National Pickle Day comes but once a year; November 14 to be precise. In celebration of the best day of the year, all Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterer locations, including those on Long Island and in Manhattan, Scarsdale and Boca Raton, Florida, are encouraging pickle-lovers near and far to come in and try the company’s delicious fresh pickles. Though Ben’s always serves pickles and coleslaw as an introduction to sandwiches and entrées for dine-in customers, each year, on National Pickle Day, Ben’s gives out pickles to anyone who walks through the door – even those who don’t make a purchase.
Ben’s Deli pickles are house-made and mouthwatering, so it might be tough to stop at just one. For those in the mood for additional yummy pickles, Ben’s serves them up in accompaniment to many of its great menu items, which includes an assortment of overstuffed sandwiches, juicy hot dogs, wraps and more.
The term pickle comes from the Dutch word pekel, meaning to brine. In the United States, the word pickle typically refers to a pickled cucumber. It is clear that Americans love these salty treats; 5.2 million pounds of pickles are consumed in the United States each year. But pickles aren’t a recent trend—they have been around for thousands of years, dating as far back as 2030 B.C. At that time, cucumbers were imported from India to the Tigris Valley where they were first preserved and eaten as pickles. Cleopatra even attributed her good looks to her diet of pickles.
Today, people everywhere honor the culinary history of pickles. This versatile vegetable can be enjoyed as a condiment, snack or side dish.
